Hello, I purchased a netbook in 2009 and used it effectively for a couple of years. Recently, the startup speed and general performance of the netbook has been awful - so much to the point that I've basically stopped using it. I wanted to see if there were things I could do to bring it back to peak performance - primarily for internet browsing and basic word processing. The netbook is an ASUS EeePC 904HA running Windows XP, 2GB RAM, 1.6GHz Intel processor, and 160GB hard drive. Any advice on what I could do to make this netbook run a little better?
Thanks much!! The 8.9' netbook is what you appear to have. I'm glad to see that you maxed it out with 2 GB of RAM. ------------------------------------------------------- Let's see what's installed and auto-loading, and if any obvious issues need to be addressed. Go and click the green 'Download latest version' link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4 After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to install it. Allow it to install in its default location - C: Program Files.
After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load. Uncheck 'Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis'. Click 'Do a system scan and save a log file'. When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.
Considering that netbook has multiple antivirus programs and has a bloated startup load and has a malware/spyware infestation and is loaded with programs and extras, I'm not surprised at all that it's running like a snail. --------------------------------------------------------- Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan. Click on the 'Open The Misc Tools Section' button. Click on the 'Open Uninstall Manager' button.
Click on the 'Save List' button. Save the 'uninstall_list.txt' file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here. Frank - thank you so much for following up with me. I really appreciate the advice and direction.
What's the complete version of Windows that's on the Microsoft Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker on that netbook? How did Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 get installed?
How did Symantec Endpoint Protection get installed? Skoda Fabia Rally Game Xbox. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go, then click the blue 'Download Now @ Bleeping Computer' link to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop. Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window. Click the 'Delete' button, then allow the deletion process to finish.
Click 'OK' 3 times. The computer will restart. When the log file appears, save it. Return here, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here. ------------------------------------------------------------- Download and save and then install the free version of Make sure to update their definition files during the install process. Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.
Make sure to uncheck and decline to use the 'Pro' or 'Trial' version, if it's offered. After they're installed and updated, restart the computer. DON'T do anything else with them yet. The Microsoft Office and Symantec were installed on the netbook as part of my university studies a few years ago. During that time I was using the netbook more as a primary device so I had installed some gaming programs on it. Now I have a larger laptop that I can use for larger computing needs, so I'm primarily interested in getting the netbook back into shape for quick internet browsing.
The complete version of Windows indicated on the sticker is 'Windows XP Home Edition ULCPC' (I can't make out the letters exactly due to fading, but I think that's accurate). I'm going to work on the other instructions you listed now. After you do a second run with AdwCleaner and submit the new log, do the following in the order that they're listed. Note: You can skip the update steps and go directly to the scan steps if you already updated them during the install process. --------------------------------------------------------- Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Click 'Updates(tab) - Check for Updates'.
When the definition files have updated, click 'OK'. Fantasia Disney Ita Download. Click 'Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan'. If infections or problems are found during the scan, the number of them will be highlighted in red. When the scan is finished, click 'Show Results'. Make sure that EVERYTHING is selected, then click 'Remove Selected'.
If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click 'Yes'. Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again. Click 'Logs'(tab). Highlight the scan log entry, then click 'Open'.
When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here. --------------------------------------------------------- Start SUPERAntiSpyware. Click 'Check for Updates'. When the definition files have updated, click 'Close'. Select the ' Quick Scan' option, then click 'Scan your Computer'. If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear and the number of them will be highlighted in red.
When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click 'Continue'. Make sure that EVERYTHING in the list is selected, then click 'Remove Threats'. Click 'OK - Finish'. If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, do so. Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.
Click 'View Scan Logs'. Highlight the scan log entry, then click 'View Selected Log'. When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here. Last year that it would be smart to continue offering Windows XP for sale until June 30th, 2008. That way consumers and businesses who didn’t want to be an early adopter of Vista had an alternative available. As that deadline approaches a petition was started by InfoWorld earlier this year to again, and as of last week it had accumulated over 106,000 signatures. But Microsoft that in just a few months Windows XP will be cut kind of. Windows XP will be no longer available after June 30th, 2008 with the exception of ultra low-cost personal computers (ULCPC’s).
These computers are becoming rather popular (such as the ), but they don’t have enough requirements to run Vista. Here’s what Microsoft had to say about it: Customers and partners have made it clear to us that Windows is the preferred operating system for ULCPC buyers, just as it is for mainstream PC users.
That’s why we are extending direct OEM sales of Windows XP Home for ULCPCs so that they can preinstall Windows on these devices through the later of June 30, 2010 or one year after the general availability of the next version of the Windows operating system. While Windows Vista provides many benefits, including an easier and more secure user experience, Windows XP Home provides an effective solution on these devices from a performance and cost perspective. You’ll notice that Microsoft made sure to say that Windows XP Home will be the only version offered to the OEM’s to put on their machines.
This is obviously a push to keep new Windows XP machines from entering the corporate world. So how do the requirements stack up between Windows XP and Vista? Well, there was such a huge time gap between the two operating system releases that the minimum system requirements differ quite a bit: Windows XP Vista Capable Vista Premium Processor 233MHz 800MHz 1.0GHz Memory 64MB 512MB 1GB Hard Drive Space 1.5GB 15GB 15GB It makes sense that Windows XP will still be available on the ULCPC’s looking at the system requirements. In particular the hard drive space is drastically different when comparing XP to Vista. Most of the ULCPC’s wouldn’t have the space needed to run Vista. Now the question is whether you buy as many retail copies of XP as you can, and then sell them on eBay after June 30th?;) Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
